Call for 2017 Chemist and Researcher of Year Nominations

We are requesting nominations for Chemist and Researcher of the Year Awards. These awards recognize outstanding individuals who work in chemistry-related fields and have made significant contributions to science, society, and the community.
The Chemist of the Year is required to be a local ACS member in good standing. Nominations require two letters of recommendation and a resume.
The Researcher of the Year is not required to be an ACS member. Nominations require one letter of recommendation and a resume.
Nominations and letters of recommendation are due by February 1. Awards will be given out at our March Cincinnati ACS meeting. Please contact Mike Weaver for more information or to forward nominations.
Call for 2017 Teacher of the Year Nominations

We are looking to recognize outstanding teachers with our Excellence in Teaching Awards. These are teachers who create excitement in student learning and have inspired students in the classroom to careers in science-related fields. All levels - High School, Middle School and Primary School – are all eligible and each level will be awarded separately.
Nominating a teacher is easy! Just let us know who should be awarded and why – short email or call – and we will do the rest.

First Annual GO Chem Retreat

Please join us for our first ever multi-section ACS retreat on February 24-26th, 2017, at Kalahari Resorts, Sandusky, OH.
We hope this will be an opportunity for professionals and students to socialize and network, and families to have some fun. The formal programming is on Saturday so that everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy the water park on Sunday!

December Joint Meeting with NOBCChE

December's joint meeting with NOBCChE will be held on Wednesday, December 7, at Xavier University. The featured speaker for the evening is Rafael Ortiz, PhD. Dr. Ortiz is currently a Section Head and Intellectual Property Manager at P&G and a member of the American Chemical Society’s National Minority Affairs Committee.

2017 Section Elections Has Begun

Online voting for 2017 Cincinnati Section officers has begun. Biographies of all the candidates can be found here.
Instructions for online voting are being distributed to all eligible Cincinnati Section members. The email notices will contain a unique PIN number and the web address to visit to cast your votes.
Contact info@acoolsystemforvoting.org if you do not receive your voting PIN email this week or to request a paper ballot.
Online voting will be available until November 14, 2016.
Spread the News -- National Chemistry Week is Here!

You can join in this year's National Chemistry Week fun, "Solving Mysteries Through Chemistry", with one of the many Cincinnati ACS Section volunteers who will be bringing free chemistry demonstrations to Cincinnati and the surrounding area.
To find dates and times of demos at libraries near you, check out the NCW Schedule.
Can't get enough chemistry demos? Don't miss the fun at the Cincinnati Museum Center Children's Museum on Saturday, October 29. Local section volunteers provide free chemistry demos all day.
Finally, don't forget the annual K-12 NCW Poetry Contest. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, October 26. You can find more information here or download an entry form here.

The Chemists Code for Success Event

The Women Chemists Committee, the Young Chemists Committee, and the UC Graduate Consortium for Cultural Diversity in Chemistry is hosting an ACS Program in a Box event titled "The Chemists Code for Success: 3 Essential Skill Sets for Your Career".
The event will be held Tuesday, October 11, at 7:00 PM in 300 Crosley on UC's campus.

2016 Oesper Symposium and Award Banquet

The University of Cincinnati Department of Chemistry and the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society are pleased to announce
the 2016 Oesper Award Winner, Maurice Brookhart (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).
This year's Oesper Symposium and Awards Banquet will be held on Friday, October 28. Professor Brookhart will speak at 4 PM on "The Development of Late Metal Catalysts for Olefin Polymerizations". A poster session and reception will follow from 5:30 - 7 PM. The ACS Banquet begins at 7 PM (location TBD). The Oesper Award presentation will follow dinner with a talk given by Joe Templeton (University of North Carolina) on "Careening Through a Career in Catalysis: Maurice Brookhart".

Activities and entertainment will include food, drinks, games, and chemistry fun. New this year is an informal poster session highlighting some of the ways to get involved and connect with colleages who share your interests.

[CANCELLED] Save the Date - First Annual GO-CHEM Event in the Columbus

GO-CHEM stands for Greater Ohio Chemistry, which is a collaborative effort between sections on the Penn-Ohio Border. The focus is to foster interaction between the Local Sections, provide a venue to foster interaction at the undergraduate / graduate levels, and raise awareness of chemistry.
The Columbus area was choosen for the gathering because of its central location. The event is planned for the weekend of Saturday, Sept 17, 2016, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin, OH, and the nearby Columbus Zoo. This year's theme is “The Wild Side of Chemistry!”. Watch for more details to come!
Party Night on the River: Brew & BBQ

The ACS Cincinnati Section and ACS Central Regional Meeting 2016 are co-hosting a social event for section members and regional meeting attendees on Friday, May 20. B&B Riverboats and Madtree Brewery have teamed up to provide a Beer Tasting of locally brewed beers while cruising on the Ohio River. A representative of Madtree Brewery will present background, tasting notes, and perspective on a sampling of beers brewed right here in Cincinnati!

In Memoriam Dr. Ted Logan

Long time Cincinnati Section member, Dr. Ted Logan, passed away on April 9, 2016, at the age of 84.
A graduate of Purdue University with a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, Ted went on to have a 38+ year career at P&G. Ted was very active in the ACS serving as an elected board member for the local ACS section and as a leader for several national ACS committees.
Memories of Ted and notes of condolence can be shared with Ted's family here.
April Meeting

The April 2016 meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 27, at Northern Kentucky University. This is our annual Student and Educators Awards Night with a featured presentation by the local section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS).

Chemists Celebrate Earth Day

The Greater Cincinnati Earth Day Coalition will host their annual Earth Day Celebration for 2016 at Sawyer Point on Saturday, April 16, from noon until 5 PM. As part of this year's Chemists Celebrate Earth Day theme “The Great Indoors”, the Cincinnati Section will have a booth demonstrating aspects of our homes such as water, air and how to keep it clean, microorganisms bacteria/mold/mildew and how to control them.

March 2016 Meeting

Call for Teacher of the Year Nominations

Each year the Cincinnati section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) recognizes outstanding area educators by giving awards in the following categories:
- - High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year
- - Middle School/Junior High School Science Teacher of the Year
- - Elementary School Science Teacher of the year
If you know a teacher who has made a difference in students’ lives through excellent, innovative teaching methods, encouraging students to pursue science, and dedication to their profession, please send us their name and the name of their school. Nominations are due by Friday, April 1, 2016. Names should be sent to either: Lynn Hogue or Mike Weaver.

Special Energy Symposium at San Diego Meeting

Cincinnati Section member and ACS Immediate Past President, Diane Grob Schmidt, is sponsoring an Energy Symposium at the National ACS Spring Meeting in San Diego. The featured speaker for the evening is Dr Glenn Boutilier, Victor Mills Society Member and recently retired from P&G. Glenn will speak on the topic of “Mastery and Other Critical Attributes for Successful Innovation.”

Recognize your colleagues and co-workers for their outstanding contributions to our field. Please submit a nomination for Cincinnati Chemist of the Year or Research Associate of the Year. The nomination deadline is January 31, 2016 February 15, 2016.
A Chemist of Year nomination should hold a terminal degree and must be a member of the Cincinnati section of the ACS. A Research Associate of the Year nomination must be or have been a practitioner within the chemical discipline, but ACS membership is not a requirement.
