January Meeting -- Chemistry and Art

January's meeting will be held at the Cincinnati Museum Center on Thursday, January 15, and will feature Dr Gregory Dale Smith, an Otto N Frenzel III Senior Conservation Scientist from the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Dr Smith's talk is titled "The Analysis and Virtual Restoration of Color Fading in Vincent’s Undergrowth With Two Figures" and will share results of a recent collaborative investigation of the cause of fading in the 1890 masterpiece of Vincent van Gogh.

December Joint Meeting with NOBCChE

December's joint meeting with NOBCChE will be held on Wednesday, December 10, at Xavier University.
The meeting will feature a talk by Kristin Williams. Kristin graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2002 and currently works as principal engineer at P&G where she does upstream research for fabric and home care. The title of Kristin's talk is "From idea to shelf: Navigating obstacles in the fast moving consumer goods industry".

A message from our Chair . . .
Dear Members,
Please note the links below that pertain to proposed changes to our bylaws. The documents include a summary outlining the explanations and reasoning for these proposed changes, the proposed changes (two iterations), and a final clean version of the bylaws document with all necessary changes incorporated. Some of the changes were mandated by ACS National, and we are obligated to make those amendments. We will discuss and vote upon these proposed changes at the December 10 regular section meeting at Xavier University.

Celebrate National Chemistry Week 2014!

Celebrate National Chemistry Week 2014 and "The Sweet Side of Chemistry - Candy" at local libraries all week long. Check out this schedule to find a library near you where local chemists will be doing free chemistry demos.
The NCW celebration continues through Friday and Saturday, Oct 24-25, with free chemistry demos in the rotunda of the Cincinnati Museum Center.

The University of Cincinnati Department of Chemistry and the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society are pleased to announce the 2014 Oesper Award Winner, Isiah Manuel Warner (Louisiana State University).
The Oesper Symposium and Awards Banquet will be held on Friday, October 24, at the Tangeman University Center (TUC) at the University of Cincinnati.
Professor Warner will speak at 4 PM on "Moving Ionic Liquid Chemistry into the Solid Phase". A poster session and reception will follow from 5:30 - 7 PM. The ACS Banquet begins at 7 PM. The Oesper Award presentation will follow dinner, and a talk given by Saundra McGuire on "Isiah Warner's Amazing Journey from Bunkie to the Oesper Medal!" will end the evening.

Local Scientists and Engineers recently honored as "Heroes of Chemistry"

A team of P&G scientists was inducted into the "Heroes of Chemistry" hall of fame earlier this month for their work on Crest Pro-Health toothpaste. This award is given annually by the ACS to a group of scientists whose innovative chemistry and chemical engineering led to a commercially successful product that has global-reaching benefits.
The P&G team was recognized for their successful development of a three paste formula that targets eight different oral health conditions. More information on the P&G team that was honored during the Spring National Meeting in San Francisco can be found here.

Learn techniques to make your science come alive to scientists and nonscientists in interviews, presentations, and networks. The ACS Program in a Box webcast session titled "Speaking Simply: Communicating Your Science" features Douglas Dollemore and Darcy Gentleman from the ACS Office of Public Affairs. Gearing up for NCW 2014!

My name is Atiya Jordan-Brown and I am the new NCW Coordinator. I am excited to announce the kickoff of NCW 2014! This year's theme is "The Sweet Side of Chemistry — Candy!" NCW and will run October 19-25.
- Cincinnati Public Libraries: We have a big requests list for demos at the Cincinnati Public Library - If you would like to lead a Library demo email me and let me know. Thank you to all Cincy Library volunteers!
- Libraries outside Cincinnati/Hamilton County: For those of you who coordinate libraries outside Cincinnati/Hamilton County, now is the time to start making those calls. Once you have made arrangements with your library/venue of choice please contact Hong Zhang to let her know the agreed time/date. We will need to add this information to our flyer and we will be uploading this info along with all other venues to national ACS website for to help people locate NCW events. Thank you for reaching out to your communities and setting these demos up!
- Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC): If you would like to help out at the CMC please contact Gloria Story. This is a great venue to celebrate chemistry and reaches so many children! Thank you to the CMC volunteers!
There will be a Demo practice again this year. Planning is in the works. Date/time/location TBD.

The Central Regional Meeting Organizing Committee announces a call for nominations for the
E Ann Nalley Regional Award, the
Stanley Israel Diversity Award, and the
Regional Award for High School Teaching.
Nominations for the Stan Israel are due Friday, August 1, and others are due Friday, September 5, 2014. The
Awards Banquet
